Paper or Plastic? How about salmonella?

Some of you may remember the old days when groceries left the grocery store in paper bags. Sometimes the contents were so heavy it required double bags.

Then the environmental movement got into the picture and protested that too many trees were being cut down every year to make paper bags and insisted we go to something else.

So grocery stores changed to plastic bags. It was a major inconvenience because the thin plastic containers did not hold their shape in the trunk and would cause them to collapse to spill their contents making the cans of soup roll around on the drive home!

After a time, people got used to the plastic and worked around their shortcomings. Some, like me, even preferred them over paper because almost all of the groceries could be carried up in one load to the kitchen by looping the handles of multiple bags in one hand.

Now that paper is pretty much out of the picture, plastic has become the villain. Probably because these bags are a product of the "evil oil companies", environmentalists are now targeting them for extinction.

Nowhere else is environmental luncay more apparent than in San Francisco where the Mayor has outlawed water in plastic bottles because it causes too much pollution. Never mind the fact that we have this expensive federal and state recycling program in place that adds taxes to all our products! No, no, now the City is poised to outlaw plastic bags in grocery stores by adding a tax for using them.

What's the solution? Go to any grocery store in the Bay Area and you will now see reuasable cloth tote bags with the store's logo printed on them that YOU CAN BUY to carry home your groceries. Can you believe it?

I am already paying for my groceries which have a "tax" built into the price of the items to cover the cost of the bagging materials, and now they want me to BUY my own tote bags? And this is going to save the planet from global warming? GIVE ME A BREAK!

And what if, in my trip to the car, the dozen eggs in my bag accidentally get broken and leak into the bottom? Can anyone say salmonella? Sure, I am smart enough to know that I need to wash it out. But what about the poor and uneducated?

For them we'll need to set up a bureau of tote bag safety to hold classes to teach people the ins and outs of carrying groceries. Don't laugh. Big government liberals will try to implement something like this. Coming soon to a grocery store near you!

Why does anyone think the government can solve ANYTHING?

Let me start off by saying that I am all for handicapped people having all the rights as everyone else, but why do we need a government program mandating things like parking places and toilets?

In some places too many parking spaces are set aside for the handicapped that are rarely used, if ever. We have been in parking lots where all the handicapped spots were used, and those with disabilities were forced to park a block or more away because the lot was so full. So who decides how many spaces are enough? Some government bureaucracy in Washington who have no idea how many spaces are needed? Is there a calculation based on the number of handicapped people in a given city or is it done by places they are more likely to shop? See where I am going with this? How can any government agency, local or federal, make an intelligent decision on the number of spaces needed? Perhaps it would be better left to the business owner, who is now under a mandate to provide a certain number of handicapped parking places whether he needs them or not. If he or she dooesn't have enough and wants more, tough.

Now let's talk about toilets. Our San Francisco office has only one urinal in its men's room. And because there is only one, it must be the handicapped type. I used to think these were low so that children could easily use them (though they are low for those in wheelchairs) and it didn't bother me when I had a choice. But in this case it is the only one to use. What's the result? Splashing, that's what! Thus, the floor ends up sticky around the urinal, not because men can't aim as has been accused by women, but that urine hitting the water in the urinal causes splashing onto the floor. If it doesn't hit the floor, then it ends up on the user's suit pants! This also has been managed by the same government agency.

So what I want to know is this: can anyone name one government program that has solved the problem that it was set up for? Here are a few:
  • Rent control? No!
  • Minimum wage? No!
  • War on poverty? No!

Can you imagine if we look to them to manage health care? And the bigger they get, the worse they are!

Where's Murtha's apology?

Republicans need LEADERSHIP!

While Democrats are eating their own, the Republican party is in no better shape! All these idiot congressmen are running around turning against the war in Iraq because they are sticking their fingers in the air and seeing which way the wind is blowing! FIRE THEM and the Democrats too! Am I the only one who can see that they are getting NOTHING done except to pass legislation that only limits our freedom. Besides, they are spending most of their time harassing the Bush administration with meaningless non-binding resolution!

Bush has lost his influence and more Republicans have deserted ship. Someone needs to bring them back around. I would suggest this is exactly why the donations are WAY DOWN. They deserve to LOSE, but the Democrats are no better. The 2006 elections show that.

Both parties have left me!

It's just sex!

Wasn't that the line when Clinton was impeached for lying under oath and coaxing other people to lie for him? "It's just sex!" No, it's about a LIE under oath.

But Senator David Vitner, a Republican from Louisiana, had his number on a D.C. Madam's telephone list... and that IS ABOUT SEX!

If he were a Democrat, that would be a resume enhancement!

Robert Kennedy Jr. - What has he ever done???

I heard Robert Kennedy Jr. calling those of us who don't believe in man made global warming traitors... I get it. Any time you disagree with the current administration, that's being patriotic (rants Hillary Clinton) but not when you disagree with people who are disagreeing!!!

Wow, that's so convoluted, I almost can't follow the logic! What has Kennedy done himself that wasn't subsidized by his family's fortune? He bashes big nameless corporations who have contributed more in jobs and benefits to the common good than he ever will as an environmental "toady" speaking in front of a bunch of groupies at "Live Earth".

Here's an example of a "have" speaking to a bunch of "have nots" trying to convince them that he is one of them. What a hypocrite. He has been living off his family's trust fund for years to subsidize his "day job" and he has the nerve to call us traitors?

Mr. Kennedy, take your raspy voiced ramblings and go away. And take your fat, bloated uncle Ted with you!

Scooter Libby and the media lies

It would be like you are accused of robbing a bank because ATM records show you were in the area at the time the crime took place. They haul you into the grand joury and you testify about what you bought that day on your shopping trip and how many pairs of shorts you chose and what colors. You can't remember the exact time you were in Macy's so you try to come close.

Two days later, Joe Blow is identified by surveilance camera as the perpetrator, but because you said you bought 4 pairs of underwear and really bought 5, the prosecutor brings you up on charges because you lied to the grand jury!

How is that fair in our legal system? Liberals say it is! That is why the Scooter Libby commutation of his jail sentence is fair because now he is free to fight this bogus charge in the courts and be found innocent of the crime. So he has a bad memory. Who doesn't?

Clinton lied on the stand and urged others to do the same to cover his infidelity. This is much more blatant breaking of the law. How is Scooter Libby's "crime" any worse? I didn't think they should have prosecuted Clinton, and I do not think they should have gone after Libby either.

So now Libby is free to challenge the court's ruling without having to go to jail. In this way, he can be found innocent, where a pardon would just have said, "You're guilty, but no punishment."
What frosts me, is Hillary Clinton can talk about this administration not having to follow the rules, while her husband was the king of that! And does the press challenge any of her statements? Of course not. In their defense, she probably has something on them!

More on the Fairness Doctrine

This morning Townhall.com published an article about the recent defeat of the immigration bill. It was beat back by the voters who made calls and sent faxes and e-mails to their representatives.

So what message did the elected officals take from that? Do they think that maybe the people who voted them in might have the right idea? No, they still think they were right and TALK RADIO just stirred us "ignorant masses" up. So TALK RADIO needs to be silenced using the Fairness Doctrine. THAT'S THE WRONG MESSAGE!

Now as a Californian, I am not likely to lose the likes of Barbara Boxer or Diane Feinstein or Nancy Pelosi or Lynn Woolsey. This has become a socialist state. And with more and more illegal immigrants moving in, it's likely to stay that way. These moronic politicians have been elected simply because they are women and because they are liberal in their politics.

In truth, California can be conservative as Prop. 187 showed. It would have denied free social services to people who are here illegally. But an unelected judge (or panel of them) in the circuit court struck down the law as unconstitutional... How can that be?

Doesn't the constitution apply to citizens of this country? Legal citizens? If not, then why bother to have foreigners go through the steps necessary to become citizens? Why not just let people in the country no matter what? And once they are here, they are citizens and entitled to all the benefits this country has to offer... Oh, wait. That happens now!

I have a good friend who is trying to bring his new wife, her son from a previous marriage and their new baby into the country from China to become citizens here... It has been over 2 years and they still are not able to come here because of all the bureaucracy and red tape... details that Mexicans and Central Americans do not have to put up with by walking across the border.

So who's the problem? TALK RADIO? I don't think so! I may have wandered from my original point, but it's clear that I am willing to admit there is more of a problem than Barbara Boxer or Diane Feinstein will... and it's not because of TALK RADIO. It's because I see the results of illegal immigration first hand... the shut down of emergency rooms because illegals are using them as their private doctor free of charge... abuse of the food stamps program... free social services and housing... turning areas into slums... decline in the education system because teachers are forced to have a bilingual cirriculum. My sister, a hard left Democrat, feels the same way!

She is really upset that illegals have babies who are born here and because they are automatically citizens by birth, it allows the parents to stay here legally. This is a law we need to change. Just because people are born here does not give them the right to be citizens. People born here of legal citizens should be allowed to be citizens. THIS MUST BE STOPPED. Not TALK RADIO!!!

Liberals have every other media source. They have most of the newspapers (which is why circulation is dwindling) and television news stations (which is why Fox is beating them all in ratings) and magazines. We have TALK RADIO. If the Fairness Doctrine (which is anything but fair...) is reinstated, this is a brave new world with the Internet. Podcasts of all the shows are available from Rush to Glenn to whomever has a conservative talk show. Free speech will reign supreme and next time there's an election those politicians responsible for trying to stop it will lose their jobs! This is a government "of the people, by the people and for the people" not just liberals!

Red Skelton predicted it YEARS ago!

Rush Limbaugh had a piece on his Tuesday show in gearing up for the 4th of July featuring comedian Red Skelton's dialog explaining the Pledge of Allegiance back when we had only 48 states... so it was some time ago.

Anyway, as he concluded his story, he explained that recently two words had been added, "under God" and suggested that wouldn't it be terrible if someone someday were to take this as a form of prayer and have the whole thing stricken from the school system?

Fast forward many, many years and look at lawsuits trying to get the pledge out of public schools for just this reason! Red Skelton... soothsayer?

Liberal lies about solving problems

After all these years how can the media avoid pointing out the failure of government programs to solve society's problems?

Year after year, Democrats point out how, if they are elected, they are going to eliminate poverty. How has a single government program helped this problem? It's been promised since the great depression that poverty will go away if we just vote Democrat. The numbers of people in poverty, however, keeps growing. Why? Because it's an INDIVIDUAL thing! Not a one size fits all solution. But for some reason, people keep buying the empty promise.

And year after year we are told that we're not spending enough money on education? After the billions and billions of dollars we have poured into the system for this endeavor, how much is enough? The answer is NONE! It is not about money, it is about the school SYSTEM! It is broken. There is no free market incentives for good teachers to rise to the top and be paid more than bad teachers who just show up. Get rid of the unions, top heavy school district bureaucracy and bad teachers, then start rewarding good teachers who get results and you will have something! When I went to school in the 50's and 60's students had to achieve or be left behind. Now, with political correctness run amok, we don't want any of the kids to feel bad for not achieving, so they just get passed. How is more money going to help that? And why hasn't someone in the media reported that???? BECAUSE THEY ARE LIARS!

Several Salient Suggesions from my fertile mind!

Several thoughts have occurred to me this week and I am going to lump them into one post:

1) Ethanol - how is it a solution to the oil crisis other than produce something that will get us off dependency from foreign oil? Won't it still pollute the same carbon dioxide and/or carbon monoxide that comes out now? How does that help the environment? Or does it expel popcorn?

2) The media can find misery in every story if they look hard enough. Where's the positive spin?

3) Read the Economics book by Thomas Sowell and you can see how government's myopic solutions look for simple ways to eliminate problems which cause them to actually hurt the people they are trying to help.

Mick O.

Gore might be just what the Republicans need to return to the White House!

Gore has proven that he is boring and only appeals to the liberal left wing kooks who support his man-made global warming theory. He helped Democrats lose in 2000 with his inability to connect with the American people as did John Kerry did in 2004. Bush was totally beatable and they blew it by fielding the luniest of candidates to run against him.

So word is that Gore is planning another run... Right, like he can win THIS time! If he can't win decisively coming off the popular presidency of Bill Clinton, then he certainly can not win in the current political climate.

The grassroots turn back of the recent immigration debacle shows that many people are now paying attention. Conservative talk radio is at an all time high and informing people on issues that the mainstream media is not. If people are paying attention then they will choose whoever has the best approach to our country's security. And it is not Al Gore OR John Edwards (as noted in a previous post).

So if Gore gets in and wins the nomination, it will be the best thing that could happen to the Republican party. I think even McCain could win against him, though it might hinge on Florida!

Mick O.

Media lies - John Edwards - where's the real story?

Edwards may be the most vacant candidate the Democrats have to offer. He was unsuccessful at regaining his seat in congress, and as is par for the party of asses, failures rise to the top. (Look at failed Oakland mayor, Jerry Brown's rise to higher California state office if you doubt me!)

First of all, why is John Edwards hiding behind his wife's skirt? We are hearing more from her than we are from him. She is constantly on the air defending her husband's remarks.

He has said the Bush policy of the NSA wiretaps, Guitmo, torture (though not his policy but the media lets Democrats get away with this broad statement; another LIE!) and the list goes on. He says that the "war on terror" is a bumper sticker, and everything Bush has done is wrong. But he'll get the bad guys!

Why isn't the media asking, "How? If you're not using any of the known tactics that seem to work like interrupting the recent terrorist plots then what secret weapon are you going to use to catch them?" Maybe peanut butter on mouse traps?
